Foot Portraits
In my foot portraits of women I use just the feet as a way to capture the particular person’s mood or essence by just portraying them through their feet and invite the viewer to guess what the woman is doing or what her disposition might be. Some of the feet portraits are carryovers from the athlete series and are close-ups of a particular athlete's feet, others of just every day types of poses. The brush stoke in this series tend to be less aggressive than in my athlete paintings, showing smoother and more subtle changes in skin tone. I use the same marker or more solid brush stroke to bring out wrinkles in the soles or definition in the toes. Through these details as well as the pose of the feet, the way the toes may be crossed, or spread or curled the viewer can decide if the woman is laying back and reading a book, laying on her stomach and talking on the phone and whether she might be happy, sad, angry or stressed. The feet show many of the same emotions as our hands or even the face does. Many people find feet to be unattractive or even disgusting; I enjoy doing these paintings that may make them think otherwise.
