Women in Motion 'Roller Derby Sub-Series'
In my series of female athletes titled 'Women in Motion', I capture the essence of sport and athleticism through my aggressive brush stroke and vivid color pallet. The combination of dry and wet brush strokes and use of multiple paint and color layers aid me in showing motion as well as the emotion of the athlete and allows me to bring out the strong and beautiful musculature of the athletes. I often use a marker or just a more solid brush stroke to help define 'cuts' in the muscle while letting the more layered brush strokes define the 'belly' areas of the muscle.
I paint images of female athletes because I like the fact that they are less mainstream and commercial. I am more intrigued by athletes that play for the pure joy and competitiveness that the sport gives them. The athletes I have become most interested in portraying are ones that are involved in sports that have a unique culture. In sports such as roller derby and surfing there is a very unique culture involved both within the groups of athletes and within the circles of fans that enjoy watching them. As a huge fan of the local Kansas City Roller Warriors roller derby team, I enjoy engaging people that ask about those particular paintings especially if they are unfamiliar with the sport but are intrigued by the images. It is a thrill having people return to tell me they went to their first bout because of seeing my paintings.
